QUICK HELP GUIDE FOR NORTHVOLT WORKERS FACING LAYOFFS

This is a comprehensive guide to help you get started right away. While some processes may take time, there are steps you can take now.

Skellefteå Kommun is actively working to secure exemptions from government agencies for Northvolt workers. They aim to implement more flexible employment requirements, such as hiring non-Swedish speaking staff, offering training packages, and facilitating job relocation/matching events to retain skilled talent in the region. Stay informed!

It’s easier said than done, but try to be patient and take the time to carefully read through each section of information. If something is unclear or you need assistance, don’t hesitate to contact the relevant authority—they are there to guide you! 🪜 STEPS

1. Register as a Jobseeker

The first step is to register with Arbetsförmedlingen to access unemployment benefits and other support. It is important that you register on your first day of unemployment – or as soon as possible (if you didn’t know). You can only apply for benefits from the unemployment insurance fund for days that you were registered as a job seeker with the Public Employment Service.

2. Unemployment Benefits

Whether you’ve paid A-kassan (unemployment insurance fund) or not, you may still have a right to unemployment compensation. For those who have paid A-kassan for less than a year or did not know that you had to sign up for it, there is a basic compensation depending on how much you have worked. If you do not qualify for unemployment benefit and are in a precarious situation (if you have nothing, no accommodation, no work, no money) – you can contact the municipality to apply for financial support.

An EU/EEA citizen who has the right of residence in Sweden is entitled to the Social Services help on the same terms as Swedish citizens.

People who do not have the right of residence (e.g. during the first 3 months in Sweden) in general only have the right to support to remedy an acute emergency situation – in practice often, one-off support for food, accommodation or travel to their home country.

3. Taking Unemployment Benefits Abroad
If you’re considering applying for jobs within the EU/EEA, Switzerland, the Great Britain or Northern Ireland you can take your Swedish unemployment benefits with you.

You must be fully unemployed and have been registered with Arbetsförmedlingen for at least four weeks after becoming unemployed. Remember to apply before you travel. You need to apply to the Swedish Unemployment Insurance Inspectorate (IAF).

Statens servicecenters provide information from several of the Swedish government agencies in one place and only provide personal guidance at their offices.

Here you can get help with e-services, fill in forms and applications, and provide information on your ongoing cases. At this service centre you can also order an ID card (for this last errand you need to book an appointment on their webpage).
 
They cooperate with The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), The Swedish Pensions Agency (Pensionsmyndigheten), The Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen), The Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) and The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) – so that you can get help with matters you have with ALL these agencies in one go!

Call and check with them if you have any liability once you leave Sweden with taxes, properties, etc. – make sure that you are wrapping up all your economical ties once you leave, or that you are aware of them to avoid surprises in the future.
